Switch-back tunnels.
What are they?
They are zig-zag "steps" 9or hairpin bends) to provide a reasonable incline angle to ascend a steep gradient.
But a train cannot make such u-turns, so the zig (or zag, hairpin bend, etc), is 'eased' by widening the turn, going into the mountain and coming out at the lower level.
